Building the Archive

The Kevin Roche archive is one of the most important resources for the study and appreciation of post-war architecture. International in scope and brilliantly occupying the crossroads of corporate post-modernism, it documents the work of a major talent. - Robert Stern

  • Linda Scinto

In a multi-year project beginning in 2007 and concluding in January 2023, Kevin Roche designated Linda Scinto to manage the processing of 2,014 containers of Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates archival material for transfer to Yale University. The collection spans over six decades of projects including eight museums, thirty-eight institutional and corporate headquarters, seven research laboratories, performing arts centers, theaters, campus buildings for six universities, several residences, and the Central Park Zoo.

In 2007 at the request of Robert Stern, then Dean of the Yale School of Architecture, Kevin Roche offered to donate his personal and professional Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates collection of papers and drawings to the Manuscripts and Archives Library at Yale University. Kevin had previously donated the Eero Saarinen and Associates professional archive in 2002, which when sent to Yale, was processed by the University archivists. In 2007, Yale adopted the practice of pre-custodial intervention which would influence the arrangement, description, and appraisal of the materials by the creators before being transferred to Yale’s repository. This policy shifted all aspects of preparing the archive to Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates. As the archivist, Linda Scinto was responsible for editing, organizing, cataloging, packaging, and transferring the vast archive, which included over 789 boxes of correspondence, 954 drawing tubes, 64,000 4x5 transparencies, and over 88,000 35mm slides. The pre-custodial methodology developed by Laura Tatum at Yale University, and organizational system that Linda Scinto developed for this project has been recognized by The International Confederation of Architectural Museums as a model for future collection acquisitions.

Linda Scinto began working in the office of Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates in 1997 as an interior designer and was Mr. Roche’s executive assistant from 2011 to 2019. Linda has lectured in Textiles, Design Studio and Construction Systems in the Interior Design Department at Paier College since 2013. Prior to teaching at Paier, she taught History of Architecture and Interiors at the University of New Haven for four years and while there developed and led a study abroad course in Italy, visiting Rome, Florence and Pompeii. She has a B.F.A., in Interior Design, from Paier College of Art and is NCIDQ certified. As a professional member of ASID, she was involved with the Connecticut Chapter for many years, serving on the board in several positions including president. Awards include ASID Presidential Citation in 1990 and 1997 and one for Chapter Service in 2002.
